If you really plan on running a directionally unstable, top heavy, under braked VW Bus at 90mph all day in the traffic, cooling could be the least of your problems! Now put that 400 HP air cooled engine in a loaded truck and trailer on a 1/2 hour uphill climb with your foot stuffed down the carb the whole way and you will be hotter than a firecracker in minutes and have a pile of melted junk at the end! So really and truly outside of the odd hot shoe blast the cooling requirements are very little different from stock. The car only ever sees the high HP output for a few seconds at a time then it is back to stock HP levels to maintain legal road speeds at a stock car weight and air resistance. That is why guys with 300 to 400 hp air cooled engines can run stock cooling fans and systems. It matters very little whether it is a 1400 cc engine or a 3500 cc engine the power requirement to do the job will be virtually the same as will the heat that needs to be dispersed. Given mechanical inefficiencies in the engine (fuel is wasted in the form of heat) zz.z kilo watts(or BTUs)/hr will have to be gotten rid of by the cooling system. Really it's the size of the car that needs to be matched to the cooling fan output not the size of the engine.įor a given car's weight and wind resistance it takes xx.x power and y.y liters/min fuel flow to keep it at - say the 90 mph you suggested.
